Cleaning Companies Wipe The Floor Much Better
Many companies are reluctant to retain the services offered through good cleaning companies because they are anxious about the cost involved. As a consequence they choose to do the cleaning themselves or delegate the duties to another member of staff.
It is acknowledged that in a tough economic environment like the one being experienced in 2009 - 2010 businesses of all sizes look to cut cost and one of the areas where this can be achieved relatively easily is by terminating arrangements with cleaning companies and taking on the cleaning workload in-house. But is this really as cost efficient as it seems? The answer is No. While there may be a tangible outgoing removed form the expenditure of the company the reality is that the intangible cost is often significantly greater. While business can easily identify a cost saving through no longer using the services of cleaning companies, it is not so easy to measure the cost of either having the business owners do the cleaning or delegating this job to a member of the staff. Just like domestic cleaning and housekeeping no one particularly enjoys doing the office cleaning. The cost of a small outgoing that was being paid to cleaning companies is far exceeded by the cost of time and emotion when internal staff or business owners take on the office cleaning. Junior staff who have joined the business bright eyed and bushy tailed rapidly become disheartened when they are asked to fulfil a cleaning role in the organisation as well. They may feel pressured to agree to take on office cleaning and may appear to be willing to do so but all the research clearly indicates that going down this path reduces staff morale and causes low self esteem and even anger (albeit that this may be internalised to hold the job in tough times).
While business owners are less likely to begrudge doing the work they generally fail to realise that energy put into emptying rubbish baskets is better directed to improving sales and leading the staff. Staff actually seeing the boss doing this sort of cleaning will become anxious. They will be concerned that as a leader, the business owner has lost focus and that the company itself may be under duress. Why else is the business owner now vacuuming the office floors? Taking this type of step can be disastrous for a small or medium sized business. Better to retain a good commercial cleaning service that will efficiently clean the offices on a daily basis. The commercial cleaning companies are well equipped to handle heavy duty cleaning. The office will present much better if bins are cleared on a daily basis, shelves dusted, and floors vacuumed. All too often if the owners (or junior staff) do this work it lapses to once every two days, then once every three days until the vacuuming for example is only done on a weekly basis. This is simply not sufficient to cope with heavy foot traffic and the spillage that often occurs on a day to day basis with coffee, tea and other food matter.
